Sharing a Car
Many families share a car.
Although it may be frustrating at times, homeschooling as a one car family can still happen.
It doesn’t mean you have to have a boring homeschool, either!
It just means you need to be a bit more aware of your family routine.
Tips for Homeschooling as a One Car Family
Schedule Your Week
As a one car homeschool family, you need to come up with a plan as to when you want to do certain things.
If there is story time at the library on Tuesday, work with your partner to see if there is a way that you can have the car that day.
By planning out your week, you are able to see when you may need the car so you can make arrangements for transportation as needed.
Maximize Your Time with the Car
If you can have the car on a certain day, make this your field trip or your day out.
Pack a lunch and go to the playground and library that day.
Don’t forget your homeschool book lists so you know which books you need to check out that week!
Pro Tip: Keep the book lists in your homeschool planner and bring that along to the library. You’ll have your lists and time to plan while your kids look for books or engage with storytime!
Find Places in Walking Distance
Depending on where you live, find things to do around you.
You can go on nature walks even if you live in the country.
Nature walks are great for bringing all of your little one’s senses into play.
Collect some pieces of nature to bring home.
Do some sorting, patterning, and nature crafts with them.
Each time you go on a nature walk, you can find different things to bring home.
Find Fun Activities To Do at Home
There are many different activities to do while you are at home.
When making your schedule for the week, pick a day to do something new.
This helps to spark joy and excitement in your homeschool.
Something as simple as printing off a printable activity for your little one to do will be exciting.
There are also many different science experiments or dramatic play areas that can be set up using items you already have on hand.
Don’t forget to try things outside as well!
Gardening can be a ton of fun and a great learning experience for your kids!
And printable scavenger hunts can make any stay at home fun and exciting!
Realistically, having only one vehicle may be on your lists of pros and cons of homeschooling, but it doesn’t have to be.
There are plenty of activities to do at home!
Ride a Bike or Use Public Transportation
Taking a bike or public transportation are both ways to get around to places if need be.
Being a one-car family doesn’t mean you have to stay at home all day, every day.
Borrow a Car or Drop other Parents off at Work
See if someone in your family has a car you can borrow if there is something you need to do.
Another option is to drop the parent that usually has the car off at work and then use the car.
This may be tough depending on when your partner works and your family’s schedule.
Grandparents, Aunts, or Uncles may jump at the opportunity to spend time with you and your little one at the library.
Ask if they can bring you and join you on your adventure.
Take Virtual Field Trips
Who says all field trips must involve loading up in the car?
Virtual field trips offer many different places to explore and learn about.
You can learn about dairy farms, visit the White House, and see the Amazon Rainforest all without leaving your house!
Go Places on Days Off
Utilize the days your partner has off and go on field trips on these days.
Most places are open both on weekdays and weekends.
One Car Family
Being a one car family can make it difficult to keep homeschooling fun.
Thankfully there are ways that you can elevate your homeschool game even if you don’t have a car.
