Teaching Feelings and Emotions with an App - Boys finger touching an ipad while playing a game

Teaching Feelings with Technology

One of the most important jobs you have as a homeschooling preschool parent is to help your child learn about feelings.

Teaching feelings and how to recognize and handle them is a preschool-appropriate skill that can help children navigate the world around them and the emotions within them.

Using Technology for Teaching Feelings

I am all about letting preschoolers learn through play and hands-on exploration of the world around them.

I think it’s integral to their development and necessary for them to develop the fine and gross motor skills that they need to master.

That being said, I also think that there is a place for technology in preschool education.

Teaching little learners how to navigate tablets and apps is something that many parents do when their child is very young.

The key is that those apps should be safe, child-centric, and focused on positive, growth experiences.

One such app not only meets those three requirements but also teaches children about their big feelings in a way that makes them easy to understand and navigate.

Meet LuvBug Learning.

LuvBug Learning App for Teaching Feelings

The LuvBug Learning program is designed to provide parents with a safe option for integrating technology in their homes with small children.

While the app is designed to run on newer iOS and Android devices for kids 5-11, it can be used with children who are slightly younger (4) or older.

After giving it a try, I would say that children who are younger than 4 years old just might not be ready for it yet.

However, older siblings will love it and you can bet that your littlest ones will be over the moon excited when they’re old enough to play!

So, how does it teach about feelings and emotions?

Through games and videos, of course!

But first, let me tell you about the parent dashboard!

Parents are In Control of the LuvBug Learning App

As a parent, you get access to a Parent Dashboard as part of the app.

It’s best viewed on your laptop, so be prepared to manage it from there.

This dashboard lets you control when your child plays, how long they play for, and what videos they watch.

It gives you stats on how they do in the games and what they’re working on.

I love this feature because then I can see where there might be gaps or where the child is struggling. Brilliant!

Now about those games and videos…

Games in the LuvBug Learning App

There are many different games that children can play in the app that focus on kindness, love (love bombs, anyone?!), and happiness.

They celebrate positivity and excitement while helping children grasp concepts like frustration, disappointment, and sadness.

The game level can be changed up or down depending on what your child needs, so you never have to worry about it getting to a point of frustration.

The games are always fun and always focused on helping children process and share those big emotions.

Here’s a clip of game play in Cupid’s Castle, one of the games in the LuvBug Learning app:

The colors, graphics, and brightness of the games are so engaging!

Videos in the LuvBug Learning App

The world runs on videos now, right?

Well, in the LuvBug Learning app you never have to worry about the content of those videos or if they’re safe for your child to watch.

All of the videos feature the same characters that are in the games and walk through difficult topics related to social-emotional growth.

As a parent, you get to toggle on and off the videos that you want your child to be able to watch in the app through your parent dashboard.

That puts you in control of the app and what your child is learning instead of being subject to just what the developers think your child should learn.

Honestly, this is a huge plus for me (and you!) when considering the LuvBug Learning app as a tool for teaching feelings and social emotional learning in preschool!

Here’s an example of one of the videos.

The graphics are just amazing!

When to Integrate the LuvBug Learning App in Lessons

When you’re having lessons on teaching feelings, it’s the perfect time to incorporate LuvBug Learning games.

When you’re talking about honesty, LuvBug Learning’s video on the topic is a natural extension of the lesson.

In fact, any time that you’re delving into social-emotional learning lessons, LuvBug Learning’s app is the perfect companion.

The breadth and depth of material related to teaching kids about emotions and social interactions is enough to make it a much-needed resource for homeschooling preschool.
