The Benefit of Teaching about India

India is the second-largest populated country in the world, which alone is a great reason to learn about it!

When children learn about different cultures, they become more empathic. They are exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking that differ from their own.

Different items and beliefs are important to different cultures. Kids must be taught from a young age that different things are lovely. Diversity and embracing it are good things.

If we aren’t teaching our little ones about new places, like India, how will they know they exist? Preschoolers are early on in their educational journey. It’s our job as parents and teachers to show them our wonderful world.

India is known for its nonviolence. This is another great lesson to teach your little ones! You can also talk about famous people from India (like Gandhi).

Keep reading to see some wonderful India activities to help teach young ones about India.

Geography Activities

Activity 1: Map Search and Find

Print out a map of Asia. Have your little ones look for India on the map. Because India is relatively large, it should be easier for your preschoolers to find.

You may want to write the word India on an index card so your little ones can reference it while looking at the map. If your map uses all capital letters, write the letters on the index card as they are on the map to make it easier for the little ones to find.

**Point out that India is a peninsula and has water surrounding it on three sides **

Save this map your printed out to help with other India activities (like the next one).

Activity 2: Freehand India with Play Dough

Looking at a map of India, have your preschoolers try to make India out of play dough. Have them discuss the shapes they see, like the pointy tip at the end.

Music Activities

Activity 1: Learn a Basic Indian Dance

Let your little ones groove to the beat by learning a traditional Indian dance. There are many beautiful dances to choose from. You may want to specify whether it is a beginner or easy in your searches. 😉

Activity 2: Make Ankle Bells

Ankle bells (Ghungar) are a common instrument used by dancers in India. They help the dancers keep the beat and make a beautiful sound.

The easiest way to make these is to string bells on a piece of thread. To make it more comfortable to wear, you should place a piece of felt under the thread and bells when putting it on.

To make it more permanent, sew the bells onto the felt. This is entirely optional. We don’t want to overcomplicate these India activities. 😉
