Australia Activities for Preschool
Take a trip to the land down under with Australia activities for preschoolers. They are all easy to pull together, hands-on, and fun.

Things to Teach Littles about Australia
Here are a few things to teach your preschooler about Australia before doing some Australia activities for preschoolers.
*Australia is a continent AND a country
*There is ocean on all sides of Australia (an island)
*The Great Barrier Reef is next to Australia. Many beautiful fish and corrals can be found there.
* Animals in Australia are a bit different than the animals that are found in North America
*Seasons are opposite— so it is cold in June, July, and August.

Geography Activities
Activity 1: Great Barrier Reef in a Bottle
Australia is the home of the Great Barrier Reef. Follow the directions for the DIY sensory bottle to create a reef in a bottle.
Use blue to color it and add ocean animals and plastic reef bits.
Activity 2: Australian Landscape Collage
Australia’s landscape is vast. Help little ones see this by creating a landscape collage with ripped-up construction paper.
This is one of the Australia activities for preschoolers that will have many tiny bits of paper. 😬
Create an outline of Australia on a sheet of white paper. Have your little one put the bits of ripped-up paper in the correct spots based on the color of the paper and the type of landscape found in that area.
Blue construction paper is used to make the water that surrounds the continent.
Green construction paper makes the forests and rainforests found around the outside edges of Australia.
Brown or orange can be used to show the hot, dry desert in the inner section of Australia.
Although these aren’t exact, they will convey to the preschoolers that Australia isn’t all the same type of environment.
Culture Activities
Activity 1: Aboriginal Dot Painting
Be sure to talk about who the Aboriginal people are (the Indigenous people of Australia) before talking about the dot painting so your little one has context.
Gather some dot-painting pictures to show your little one what they look like before doing this pick of the Australia activities for preschoolers.
Using paper, paint, and a Q tip, let your little one try their hand at dot painting. You may want to outline something (like their hand or a kangaroo) for them to dot around.
Activity 2: Cardboard Boomerangs
Draw a boomerang shape on a piece of cardboard. After an adult (carefully) cuts out the boomerang, encourage little ones to make the boomerang their own by decorating it.
Once done, take them outside for a spin. This is one of the Australia activities for preschoolers that will get their energy out (hopefully).
Math Activities
Activity 1: Kangaroo Jumping Measurements
Using construction paper, create Australian animal footprints. After this is complete, have your little one jump as far as possible.
Using the animal footprints, they then measure how far they jumped (from the starting point to where they landed).
Little ones will love seeing how many kangaroo, koala, dingo, or platypus footprints they jump. Let them see that the animal foot sides aren’t the same.
This is one of the Australia activities for preschoolers that offers a big bang for your (time) buck. It is about measurement and has built-in gross and fine motor skills, learning about new animals, and comparison.
Activity 2: Sydney Opera House Shell Patterning
The Syndey Opera House is an iconic landmark of Australia. Let your little one see it and notice how it resembles shells.
Gather some shells (or pictures of shells) and create patterns. The shape, size, color, or texture of the shell can all be attributes that can help create a pattern.

Language Activities
Activity 1: Learn Australian Slang
To kids not from Australia, the way people from Australia talk may sound different. Add on the new words they use, and kids may be memorized.
Teach your little ones some common Australian words they may not be familiar with.
You can listen to Australian books being read on YouTube to hear the accents and some of the slang being used.
Some littles may be familiar with this because of a *certain* popular kid show 😉
Activity 2: Letter Kangaroom Pouches
Create kangaroo punches by cutting out two large half circles from paper. Line up the circles and glue, tape, or staple around the curved part, leaving the straight part open.
Place small items or pictures of items in each pouch. Let your little one reach in and grab the item. Have them tell you the letter the item starts with.
If your little one isn’t quite ready for that activity, put a letter tile inside the pouch. Your little one will grab out the letter and say its name.
Music Activities
Activity 1: Didgeridoo Craft and Play
What a fun name—didgeridoo! You can create one by gathering a paper towel tube, wrapping a paper tube, or taping together toilet paper tubes.
Preschoolers can decorate the outside of it.
Show little ones how to make sounds through it.
Activity 2: Rain Stick Weather Sounds
Tropical storms (cyclones) are common in Australia from November to April. There are an average of 11 cyclones during this period!
Create a rainstick to mimic the sound of tropical storms. Find instructions here.
Cooking Activities
Activity 1: Fairy Bread Decorating
Australia has a bit of a different birthday tradition than North America.
Australians eat fairy bread on birthdays. Grab white bread, butter, and colorful ball sprinkles, and easily make some with your preschooler.
Have your little one spread butter on the bread and cover it entirely with sprinkles. Then have an adult cut it into triangles, and enjoy!
Activity 2: Lamington
Work together with your preschooler to make a lamington. It starts with butter cake or sponge cake that is then cut into squares. The cake squares are then covered in chocolate and rolled in coconut pieces.

Australia Activities for Preschoolers
