Why Make an Orange Bird Feeder Craft

Fine Motor Skills

After the orange is sliced open, preschoolers can use their hand muscles to scrape out the inside.

This task requires holding and manipulating a spoon. It’s no easy feat, but making an adorable orange bird feeder craft is worth it.

Connection to Wildlife

What’s better than observing nature? Seeing animals interact with something you created specifically for them.

Little ones will love seeing birds scope out and enjoy their orange bird feeder craft that they worked hard to create.

This may inspire your little ones to find other ways to help protect and care for wildlife and the environment.

Sensory Exploration

Are you able to spell the fresh orange just by reading this post? From the smell to the squish of the inside of the orange, little ones can experience a burst of sensory input.

Try having a conversation about what they see, smell, feel (and maybe even taste 😉). Introducing new vocabulary, like rough peels and juicy segments, helps little ones to learn new words in a fun (and tasty) way.

Showing Different Uses for Things

In an age where things can be bought, shipped, and delivered in a few hours, it’s important to show little ones that not everything needs to be bought.

Sure, there are beautiful birdhouses online or in-store, but that doesn’t mean they need to be bought.

Let your little ones see that things at home, like an orange, can be put to fantastic use in a new way by making an orange bird feeder craft.

Not only is it filling a need to make a bird feeder, but it also shows preschoolers they can make and be proud of things to help their local wildlife.

Items Needed

*Whole orange

*knife (adult use)

*spoon

*pen/chopstick (or something similar to poke holes)

*bird seed

*yarn or string

How to Make an Orange Bird Feeder Craft

1. Roll the orange around on the table. This is a quick trick to make it the juiciest (and hopefully, it will help make the peel drier for the feeder).

2. An adult should cut the orange entirely in half.

3. Using a spoon, have your preschooler scoop out the inside segments of the orange. Put the inside pieces into a bowl to eat as a snack later (or now while scooping 😆).

This task requires some finesse and strength. Watch out for a tired preschooler and hopefully catch them before they become too frustrated.

4. Once the inside is clear of all the segments, use a pen or chopstick to poke two holes opposite each other near the cut edge of the orange peel.

5. Place a string or yard through one hole and tie the end. Thread the opposite end of the string/yard through the other hole and tie it.

Tip: Use the chopstick to help push the yarn through the hole.

6. Fill the orange with birdseed.

7. Find a branch to hang the orange bird feeder craft on.

If you are able, choose a branch you can view from inside.

8. (optional) Use your DIY Binoculars to see which birds (or other wildlife) frequent the feeder.
