Why Teach ASL to Preschoolers

Many people teach their babies some signs from American Sign Language (ASL) to help them communicate before they can consistently say words.

Why does the learning have to stop there?

Knowing ASL is a great skill kids could benefit from knowing. By taking the time to learn the ASL alphabet, littles will open the door to communicating with deaf people. Even when they don’t know the correct sign for what they are saying, they can use finger spelling.

Teaching kids another language, like ASL, at a young age is a beautiful idea because kids pick up things quickly when they are young.

What better time is there to learn than now? You never know when you or your little one may need (or want to) use ASL.

Plus, learning ASL helps improve preschooler’s ability to recognize and write their ABCs.

This St. Patrick’s Day alphabet activity helps to connect the written letters (uppercase and lowercase) with the ASL sign, further helping your little one recognize and remember their alphabet.

ASL is a great fine motor exercise, too. 😉

The learning doesn’t have to stop there — After learning the alphabet, be sure to continue doing alphabet activities to help your little one retain what they have learned.

You can then move on to other signs to add to your ASL knowledge.
